Sabbath Moments vs Social Media

Dear Sabbath Seekers,

This may not apply to all of you but to many of you it will strike a chord.  The University of Chicago just came out with a study that says the urge to check tweets, your facebook page or log in is stronger than the urge for sex or nicotine.  Like I said this may or may not apply to you!  However,  what may apply to you is that you are a work-a-holic and you never take a moment off.

My Sabbath Moment challenge this week is to unplug, unhook, or just STOP the time wasters or overworking and use that time for your Sabbath Moments this week.    Plug God into your social media time slot and think about what you would write to God on your page or in a tweet.  Concentrate on God as your friend, your best friend.

For those of you who do not do social media or overwork relax into your time with God this week.  There may be a discussion you need to be having.  There may be a dilemma you need help with.  There may be a week worth of gratitude you need to express.  Or, use this passage from The Message and reflect on it, how it applies to your life, and where your prayer takes you….

” Silence is praise to you, Zion dwelling God, and also obedience.  You hear the prayer in it all.”  Psalm 65.1-2

Have a great week of being unplugged from the world-wide web and plugged into the web-master of the world.

“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”  Jeremiah 6.15

Be blessed,

Enjoy The Ride of Sabbath Moments

Dear Sabbath Seekers,

On our way to school the other day, my four-year old granddaughter gave me some great advice.  As we were entering the highway which has a slight dip she said, “Here we go! Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!”  I laughed out loud and she asked me in all seriousness, “Are you enjoying the ride, Nana?”

Out of the mouths of babes….

She certainly enjoys the ride every day, the ride that is her life.  Each new morning brings new opportunities, new discoveries and new pleasures.   She laughs, she sings, she dances, she tries new tastes (including paste and boogers) she plays and she rests.   And sometimes she does all that in ten minutes.

Her admonition and query to me were as if the voice of God had spoken.   In essence that is what the command to take a Sabbath is all about…sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the ride.   Imagine God having to ask us if we were enjoying the ride, the gift of Sabbath?   How sad would that be?

Enjoying the Sabbath is implied in the commandment.  No one is to work.  NO ONE…not even the servants and animals.   Everyone is to relax and treat the day as holy/wholly unto God.  Everyone is commanded to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor, of God’s creation and of each other.

How have we gotten so far away from this blessed gift?

I am taking my cue from my four-year old’s joy and from the wisdom of God and on my Sabbath I am going sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.  How about you?

“and a little child will lead them”  Isaiah 11.6b
